John Schiavone began his career in transit over 40 years ago with the Swedish company Saab-Scania where he began as a service manager before moving to sales. He joined the APTA staff as director of bus technology and maintenance in 1985, before becoming an independent consultant in 1990. John authored several studies for the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) ranging from understanding advanced onboard electronics, training, alternative propulsion systems, developing standardized bus maintenance practices, and other subjects. John is currently involved with the Transportation Learning Center on a Department of Labor (DOL) project to advance transit bus maintenance apprenticeship programs. He also continues to work as a technician as a hobby restoring vintage Porsche automobiles, which gives him first-hand experience understanding the challenges faced by technicians in their daily work.
